A new blue LED light used to treat skin disease is coming to the UK this October.
Philips have developed a wearable blue LED light that can be used at home to treat skin disease psoriasis vulgaris. Psoriasis affects around 125 million people worldwide, 80% of which have the psoriasis vulgaris condition. The condition is caused by the over rapid division of skin cells and symptoms are: painful inflammation, scaly red plaque and peeling. Though the condition cannot be cured there are treatments to clear or reduce the symptoms.
Philips conducted a clinical trial with the University Hospital of Aachen to test the affect and safety of Philips BlueControl when it comes to the symptoms of psoriasis vulgaris. In the trial patients were treated for 12 weeks and showed a 50% reduction of the symptoms according to the local Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI). There were no side effects to the blue LED light treatment.
The Philips Blue Control will be prescribed by physicians, reducing the need for patients to make regular appointments. The system can be easily integrated into a patient’s daily routine by simply wearing the strip on affected arms, legs, elbows and knees. The UV-free LED light therapy has 40 high-intensity blue LED light bulbs with tailored light settings. The device is battery powered so can be used anywhere.
