As part of their plan to reduce their energy consumption, Walmart has purchased energy efficient LEDs to be placed in some of their stores based in the US, the UK, Asia and Latin America. The new fixtures will use 40% less energy.
Walmart and GE Lighting have a history of collaborating to develop products to meet Walmart’s needs. With the new LED ceiling lights installed in the US, a saving of $34,000 a year is expected from each store.The total energy savings expected over the next 10 years is equal to eliminating 327,360 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
With the main sales floor lighting equating to 90% of the total lighting usage in each building, this will reduce energy use by over 5% per store in the US. The lights also have a longer lifespan further reducing costs in terms of maintenance.
In 2014, Walmart and GE expect to re-fit stores across the world, hoping it will benefit them in the following ways:
