Walmart partners with GE Lighting to reduce it’s lighting costs.
As part of their plan to reduce their energy consumption, Walmart has purchased energy efficient LED light bulbs to be placed in some of their stores based in the US, the UK, Asia and Latin America. The new fixtures will use 40% less energy.
Walmart and GE Lighting have a history of collaborating to develop products to meet Walmart’s needs. With the new LED ceiling lights installed in the US, a saving of $34,000 a year is expected from each store. The total energy savings expected over the next 10 years is equal to eliminating 327,360 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
With the main sales floor lighting equating to 90% of the total lighting usage in each building, this will reduce energy use by over 5% per store in the US. The lights also have a longer lifespan further reducing costs in terms of maintenance.
In 2014, Walmart and GE expect to re-fit stores across the world, hoping it will benefit them in the following ways:
President and CEO of Walmart stores, Doug McMillon, said:
We have worked to find and scale energy-efficient LED light solutions that are cost effective and high quality, and now working with GE, we’re paving the way to make this a mainstream solution for the retail industry. LED light bulbs have become an integral part of our energy efficiency model for our stores and play a key role in achieving our overall sustainability goals. Just as important, the energy cost savings coming from these innovations will help us maintain the low prices our customers depend on us to provide.
GE Chairman and CEO, Jeff Immelt, said:
