Wokingham will be switching off an extra 504 street lamps bringing the total to around 2,000 lamps. The lights will now be turned off between 12:30am and 5:30am saving the council nearly £36,000.
Wokingham Borough Council are also replacing 700 street lights with more energy efficient alternatives. The street lights chosen to be turned off at night will also be upgraded.
The police were involved in choosing which lights will go out. The lights that will remain on are: most road lights (to avoid accidents), high security buildings, train stations, night clubs, pubs, residential areas, remote alleys, car parks, bus stops and sheltered housing for the elderly.
Executive Member for Planning and Highways, Councillor John Kaiser, said:
Street lights are carefully chosen to become part of the part night lighting scheme, and the wellbeing and safety of residents and motorists is key to this. We’ve been carrying out part time lighting since 2009 sand so far 1,434 street lights have become part of the scheme with an annual saving of £18,000 per year per 1,000 part time lights. The replacement street lights will not only be more energy efficient and reduce light pollution but will be of no cost to the taxpayer as the costs of installing is outweighed by the savings in energy and maintenance costs.
