Plymouth City Council is spending £8 million this summer to upgrade their street lighting.

The project will begin in summer when over 28,000 street lights will be replaced with LED lamps. This is part of an initiative to reduce energy usage, Plymouth will expect to save £1 million a year from energy cost after the switch.

Mark Coker, the cabinet member for transport, said:

As well as being more economical, the new lamps will have additional social benefits. The light they admit is whiter and cleaner. As a result, we hope that the new street lights will make people feel safer.
