As you may already be aware, a lot of towns and cities have made a switch in their street lighting to LED light bulbs. This is to save money on maintenance costs and energy costs. Now maintenance costs have seen a slight rise.
Due to the little-to-no heat emitted from the LED light bulbs the snow must be cleaned off of the lights manually. The old halogen and incandescent traffic lights used to be self-cleaning as the heat they emitted would melt the snow leaving the traffic lights clear.
Traffic Signal Technician, Calvin Brown, said:
[The old lights] were warmer so they were self-cleaning. We go up in a bucket truck and physically clean it out with our hands or a small broom. Sometimes we use a telescoping rod that we tape to a stiff bristle brush to so we don’t need a lift truck then.
