The new president of the Society of Light and Lighting, John Aston, wants the lighting industry to promote awareness of links between lighting and public health.

The society was recently awarded funding from the Cibse Research Fund for research into human response to LED lighting.

The SLL appointed Bob Bohannon as honorary treasurer, Iain Carlile as vice president, Jeff Shaw as vice president of regions and Richard Cable as vice president of external affairs. John Aston is a lighting consultant and was the green marketing manager for Philips. Liz Peck of LPA lighting has been elected to take over as president at the end of the term.

At the Society of Light and Lighting’s annual meeting last week, Aston said:

There is a clear need to improve the level of lighting knowledge held by the public’s both in basic terms of quality and quantity as well as addressing any potential health risks that new technology may bring.

He added that he wanted the industry to ‘make lighting an important subject that as recognised for the great values it offers in work at play and in terms of our health and well-being. In such a context we can then show that being a lighter is a profession that is worthy of respect and property valued by our peers.
