Face-recognition specialist, Aurora, are planning to release infrared passport verification software later this year.

The infrared to colour facial recognition software works by comparing a colour photograph to another for example a passport image and a live subject photo. It is predicted to reduce passport identity error by 25%.

The system is able to overcome problems such as: facial expressions, aging, head angle and change of hairstyles. Making it more reliable than current software.

As infrared is used as the light source for live capture, the software is able to do it from any location without a specialist screening booth so it is easily transported if necessary.

Aurora has tested its face recognition technology on real world data and can now recognize over 94% of all passengers despite the age of the passport, change in appearance and variations in lighting conditions.
